About learning spaces

This week I participated to a meeting in the Magic Skybox on EDTECH island in SL and felt enchanted by this nature-like environment in which added animations like leaves driven by the wind, background animals sounds and a fireplace gave the impression of an alive place without being distracting.  It had little furniture (table, chairs and cushions on the ground) just to make people comfortable in an informal space. Actually the atmosphere was “magic” and motivating, I can say very suitable to foster the flow of thoughts/brainstorming.

The fireplace gave me a perception of familiarity and reminded me friendly environments similar to those sometimes dedicated to storytelling in SL; looking at the snapshots here attached, I feel they perfectly represent a place which can elicit a sense of mystery and enchantment, variables that can strongly affect learning as stated in the interesting contribution by Ken A. Graetz, The Psychology of Learning Environments, which constitutes one of the chapters of the collective EDUCAUSE e-book Learning Spaces (Diana G. Oblinger, Editor).
